Description:

China, Qing dynasty, late 19th c.
29,2 x 30 cm/ 29 x 30,4 cm, R.
Black silk gauze, finely embroidered with counted stitches in colored silk and metal threads (gold and silver) in appliqué technique with colored silk. In the rank badge without bird a gilt paper piece is underlaid; the embroidery only with silk threads in counted stitches.
The gold pheasant represents the high second civil rank. It is worked and appliquéd separately, as is the pink sun in the upper left, as is usual for late rank badges. The rather thin silver threads were fixed with colored silk on the background, thus achieving a rich colorfulness. The frame with stylized dragons and Shou medallions. The rank badge with the eight Buddhist treasures similar in design and techniques, but without medal threads. The animal not finished, only the body shape left open in the embroidery and backed with gilt paper. Frame with bats and Shou medallions.
